You Make Me Happy

This is an album that I started at GASC 2008 in a class taught by Staci Etheridge. The pictures are from summer 2009 in Texas and represents some of the things that make Reino happy.
The album and papers are all from Cosmo Cricket. The paper is the Get Happy collection. The letters in the album spell H-A-P-P-Y.

Indiana Jones cake

We had Reino’s 7th birthday party today. Of course it was all about Indiana Jones and we had to deliver a cake that fit the theme. After searching the web, I decided the easiest thing to do was try to duplicate the scene on the Motorcycle Chase (#7620) box. I made a rectangle cake and a round cake. My husband is very creative so of course I consulted with him on the best way to cut and shape the pieces. He had some specific ideas, so I let him do the shaping then I applied the frosting and handed it back to him for decorating.

Here it is, all cut and I’ve started applying the road.

I crushed some packaged oatmeal cookies in the little food processor and used them for dirt on the road. The tree is under some of the cake, so I had to frost around it.

At this point I handed it over to Jouni to finish. He had a vision and I didn’t want to interfere.

The kids loved the cake and thought it looked great. We had the party outside and when I brought the cake out, Jouni played the Indiana Jones theme music.

Happy Birthday, baby!

Today is Reino’s 7th birthday. I just can’t believe he’s 7 already. Here are some pictures to show how he’s grown and, I think, gotten even more handsome.

Brand new and very sleepy.

At his 3rd birthday party.

And on his 7th birthday.

The scar from his fall in April is healing, but still very visible. He had chicken pox within the last few weeks. The other red spots are from that.

First day of First Grade

I can’t believe my baby is in First Grade. School started at 9, so we left at 8:45. Here he is zipping up his jacket. Yeah, it was cool this morning.

Ready to go. Doesn’t seem to have a smile for me this morning.

The school is about 700 yards from our house. We got there in plenty of time. Oh, now he has a smile.

Finding his seat. He has a great seat directly across from the chalkboard. Some kids are facing the middle of the room, but Reino got lucky.

My serious student. He didn’t mind at all when it was time for me to leave.

Stitches :(

We were in Tampere for the weekend with Jouni’s family. His parents own a timeshare week at a spa and we join them for a weekend every year. I have an exam on Tuesday and was studying, but Reino went swimming with Jouni’s dad and Jouni’s sister’s family. As usual, studying makes me sleepy and I was having a little nap when this frigid hand snapped me out of my sleep. Reino had slipped and hit his head. The first aid person at the pool had put a bandage on and wrapped it up, but he was very upset and crying. I got him calmed down and dressed him then we removed the bandage and took a look at the damage. It was bleeding a lot, which is common for head wounds, but I could tell right away that he needed stitches. Jouni drove, his mom navigated and I sat in the back with Reino. We went to Hatanpään sairala where we received very good care. First, a nurse checked him to see if he needed stitches or if butterfly bandages would do. After that examination we were sent back out to the ER waiting area. A new pile of gauze was applied to Reino’s head and this hat topped it off to keep the bandage on without the need for tape.

After waiting a few more minutes, we were called back to a treatment room. Reino was really scared. He said it didn’t hurt, but he was scared of the needles and the blood. Here, the doctor is talking to him about what happened. Reino is reaching for me.

The instruments of doom 😯

And being stitched. The local anesthetic made the wounded area into a bump. After that injection, he didn’t feel anything.

A bit more calm, but still scared. It was only two stitches, I think.

And afterward. He really liked his hair. 😆 He doesn’t mind posing for pictures now and looks forward to having a scar like a tough guy. I asked him what he would tell his friends at school. He said he would say, “It’s a really long story, but I fell out of an airplane.”

Salo Family Christmas 2007 – album

I made this album from the Scenic Route Roxbury collection. I used a Rusty Pickle chipboard album as the base and painted the edges white and gold then used some Stickles to give it sparkle.

The front cover features me (according to Reino). The paper title is from a page of die-cuts. The zigzag circle is what was left after I punched the die-cut out of the paper. I cut it out and used it. Can’t let anything go to waste!

The Adventure of a Lifetime

Reino started Kindergarten today. I’m so excited for him. He’s so ready for this and it’s finally here. I wasn’t sad this morning when I dropped him off. I’m just excited about the things he’s going to learn that will help him to become the man he will be. Last night when we were lying in his bed, he told me to wake him up by moving him and saying his name. 🙂

Before I woke him up, I had to take this picture.

Surly at breakfast. He’s just like me in the morning.
